West Plains MO | Promoting a Business in The Ozarks

West Plains MoPromoting Business in West Plains MO

This short article is the first of a series of posts focusing on promoting and stimulating the economy in the West Plains Mo area.   At the same time this post also provides some informational background on the contents of OzSBI’s upcoming March 18, 2014 workshop on content marketing.

Keys to Economic Stimulation

One key to stimulating the economy of any area is to encourage an inflow of cash into that area from economically healthy areas.  That’s true for an entire country, or for the smallest municipalities.

The United States encourage exports, which in turn result in an inflow of cash which originated in the economies of other countries.  This creates a flow of cash which otherwise would not have existed on its own domestically.  Areas as small as West Plains and Howell County are not an exception to that principle of cash flow and economic growth.

Historically recognized as a relatively low income area, the standard of living in The Ozarks has in fact been gradually rising in recent years as more local residents have learned to generate higher income levels, many of them arising from doing more business with outside areas.

Local residents accomplish this by either working at home for themselves, or by working for larger companies.  In either case, when emphasis is placed on selling products or services to outside areas, the result is an increase of resources and cash flow into our area.  That cash then circulates around and ultimately benefits locals by changing hands and  being here to be spent!

Local Content Marketing Promotes and Encourages Cash Flow into West Plains

Content marketing concepts encourage and enable business owners to learn to draw from a broader range of customer base, much of it being outside of their traditional geographical area.  How is that growing external customer base found?

A growing customer base is created by establishing a  more effective present online!

The bottom line result of increased cash flow for any business is an increase in its revenue. More revenue benefits not just that company and its employees.   In the long run and in the big economic picture, everyone and every other business in the community benefit from that increased presence of cash.

How does doing business online stimulate a lower standard local economy?west plains mo

Businesses in previously depressed economic regions are acting as catalysts to the stimulation of  the local economies by focusing their marketing efforts in an online direction. The most effective ways of marketing a business online are represented by the art and science of content marketing.

Effectively implemented content marketing causes more cash to flow in from outside of the area.  It then naturally changes hands inside the area, thereby benefiting not only business owners, but its employees, and ultimately the community at large.

An Increased Standard of Life in West Plains

Like changes in atmospheric pressure pressure adjust naturally. similarly, economic voids are also naturally filled and adjusted.  Our local economy can continue to grow by leaps and bounds when effectively stimulated  by efficient and forward thinking  uses of internet marketing!

Even the most locally oriented businesses reap the benefits of economic growth stimulated from the outside.  As a result of in increase in the presence of cash in the community created by those doing more business with outside areas, their own business  revenue will also also necessarily and naturally increase.  Why?  More money is being spent in the community.  That improvement in the business climate ultimately leads to the creation of  more jobs and higher salaries. It’s an expanding trend!

Improving technology is helping

With the advent of improving high speed internet availability, even more opportunity is continually opening up for online based local businesses, fueling a great positive economic adjustment for our area.

The Elevator Speech on Content Marketing

Content Marketing Elevator Speech from an Ex-Engineer’s Perspective

I didn’t really intend to write about an elevator speech but this post turned into that. This post is the result of some hand written notes which I first used as an outline content for an introductory video on content marketing.

But after watching my video we decided it was too indicative of my engineering background, and that it might not appeal to everyone.  So, read on for a bit and decide for yourself if you like my writing  or watching my video.   If you don’t like this post or my video, don’t worry.  Watch Kristen instead.  I won’t be offended.  (It’s not embedded yet anyway….it was so damned long that I had to cancel the upload so we could go home last night.)

Video Interview on Content Marketing

We did Kristen’s video like an interview, very candid and informal.  I’m going to embed them both in this post but for now it’s just her.  If you like watching her better, I don’t blame you.  So do I.

In fact, the title for this post already no longer matches the contents.  I got rid of the nerdy stuff that’s in the video.   I’m going to continue on, and later I’m going to attach my video that you might find less than interesting to listen to anyway, anyway.

What do you think so far?  I’m glad you haven’t left yet!

The Elevator Speech

elevator speech

Always have an elevator speech ready!

I’ve been working on an elevator speech.  I came up with a good one on the spur of the moment when I was chatting with an old friend from high school who asked me to describe what my business is all about.  And in just a few seconds I came up with the best answer ever.  I told you I was pretty clever!

Here it is:

“Content Marketing is about helping people get more business from their website by teaching them how to become recognized authorities online in whatever they do.”

That could be followed up by this:

“ – thus resulting in an increased bottom line”.

Content marketing is about making more money because you bothered to wave the flag about your ability and knowledge, and that translates to business authority.

Who thinks they don’t need to do this?  Experience indicates that apparently a lot of people take the recognition of their authority for granted.

The fact is, if you are already doing a good amount of business because you really ARE good at what you do, and people know it, then whatever it is you do that makes people respect you, IS content marketing!  If you don’t realize that, you’re taking your own authority for granted!

Most People Enjoy Respect

As Mel Brooks said as King Louis XVI in History of the World,  “It’s good to be the King!”

elevator speech

Well, some people do anyway, but “It’s good to be the KIng!”

If you are an authority, you might as well take advantage of that fact and broadcast it to the world.  That’s what the most financially successful business people do!

What happens when you do?  What happened to Steve Jobs when he started tooting his own horn about his own work?  Apple was born.  Where is it today?

What happens when you don’t?  Essentially, nothing special happens when you don’t toot your own horn.  The people who do toot their horns come out ahead of those who don’t.  It’s okay to be satisfied with mediocrity in business.  But if you ask just about anyone, they will tell you they don’t want to be mediocre.  Do You?

Noble Intentions

We have entered into this business with the noblest of intentions, and we intend to stay on that course.  There is virtue in helping others to help themselves, and that is our bottom line objective.

Yes, we intend to make money in the process.  We believe we will benefit ourselves in proportion as we benefit others. Our objective is to help you learn to take control of your own self promotion and web presence.

In the long run you will benefit the most by improving yourself, while at the same time we, as the source of that help,  will benefit by gaining recognition as competent marketing managers and mentors.

Developing Content Marketing Authority

Content Marketing Authority

A basic understanding of content marketing must precede the ability to establish content marketing authority. Kristen and I have found out that we need a few good one liners because “content marketing” isn’t a word people that many people know yet.

But they need to know it if they expect to develop authority!  And if you can’t describe what you do in just a couple of sentences, it doesn’t sound interesting or worthwhile and you lose them.

We want to keep everybody we talk to, so here are a few one-liners on Content Marketing:

  • Increase your bottom line:  Get recognized and respected online.
  • Got a website?  Then let the world find it!  You’ll get more business!
  • Grow and Manage your online presence: It brings you business!
  • Spread your authority online:  Being found brings new business!

What do all of these one-liners have in common?  They all have to do with being online, and they have to do with making more money.  If you’re in business and you aren’t a hot topic that comes up everywhere where people are looking for information (ONLINE!) that has to do with what you do,  you need to become one!

Become a Hot Topic!

marketing authority

Be One! You Must Be Seen and Known!

If you become a recognized authority at what you do, your customer base will start to mentally connect your name with your business.  How does that happen?

You become an authority at what you do by being involved with groups and activities connected with your work.  In the internet era, those groups and activities are online.  In the pre-internet era those things were offline.  But they are the same groups and activities.

There are a lot of success stories that sound like this, aren’t there?  How about Steve Jobs and Bill Gates?  They both were just tech nerds that started out in their garages!  They didn’t use the internet to build their reputation because it didn’t exist yet.   In marketing-speak, they built their” brand”.

What distinguished those two engineers from a sea of equally qualified and inventive engineers?  It was nothing other than “brand building”.

What happens when you don’t build your brand?  What happened to all of Bill Gates’ and Steve Jobs’ friends and peers who were just as clever as they were?

Well, really, nothing significant happened to them.  In contrast, what happened in the lives of these two guys who understood how to “build their brand”?

There are brand building businesses like Microsoft and Apple, and there were all the other non brand building businesses who sold computers and operating systems that eventually went by the wayside.

Which category would you rather put your business into?

Branding Principles Apply at ALL levels of Business

Everybody can identify with the success of Apple and Microsoft, but you don’t have to be a prospective corporate giant to experience the same principles

The sky is the only limit!

The sky is the only limit!

of publicity.  A principle is a law that operates always, and on anything it is applied to.  And branding is a principle!

Maybe you only run a gardening shop.  If there are a couple of other good gardening shops around town, and you are the one who always toots your horn in the local Gardening Club newsletter every month, and the other two stores don’t, which store is most likely to be perceived as the authority on gardening?

The Essence of Content Marketing

There are many ways to build your brand, with or without the internet. Your customer base is finding what they want to find on the internet.  Are you going to play in the same game as them?  The essence of content marketing is brand building, specifically online.

Develop Content Marketing authority!

Not to sound like a broken record, but please watch our free video training series presented mostly by Kristen, but partly by me.  You will be emailed a link to it by simply filling in the box at the top of the right sidebar of this page.  Then let us know how we are doing!  Drop us a line.  We would be happy to hear from you!

E-mail Marketing Boosts Online Visibility

e-mail marketing

E-mail Marketing And Your Visibility

You may or may not choose e-mail marketing as a long term element of your strategy. Whether or not you do, here is a situation where you might want to give it a try.

Let’s say you have started your new website, and it looks great!  You also started a blog related to your specialty, and you’ve been making great videos, putting them on You Tube,  embedding them in every post, and sharing them all over the social media,  just like STRATEGY Content Marketing taught you to do! Now you’re anxiously watching the daily statistics and waiting for the visitor numbers to start climbing. But they don’t seem to be doing much.   Every day you ask, “Is anything happening yet?” I’ve been there, and I still keep doing this every time I start a new site even though I know better!

It takes some time!

If your site is new, even when you’re faithfully and regularly contributing fresh, original, search engine optimized content, you’re probably not going to notice a huge jump in traffic in the short term.  It’s going to take at least two to three months of regular and high quality content production before you even have a significant of content to begin to deliver the desired result of driving quality traffic to your website.   It takes some time for your material to gain recognition and authority. You’re doing everything right and you’ve planted the seeds.  Now you have to wait for them to sprout and produce fruit, but you need some attention now!  E-mail marketing can jump start your infant content promotion program.

Directed e-mail marketing

You can make your presence better known in the short run by pushing things yourself with email.  I always prefer to begin with the contacts I already know because I can be more assured of a comfortable success ratio.  When my friends or acquaintances receive an email from me, they are far more likely to look at it than are strangers.  There’s also a little bit of peer influence, as I see it.  If you’re doing a good job and it shows, your friends will want to help you.

Mass e-mail marketing

You might just as well choose to go the route of mass mailings.  It’s easy and cheap to buy massive quantities of valid email addresses and just use an autoresponder to shotgun your announcements all over everywhere.  I find this approach to be less than fully encouraging because the success and response ratios are almost assuredly going to be much lower.   But it can work!  Or you could some comfortable combination of those approaches. Email  Marketing is More than just a Letter! Do not just send out a nicely written marketing letter.  Your short but informative cover letter has to be catchy, and it has to contain much more than words!  Use the power of the internet and your presence on it to draw attention.  I’m going to include here an example of one of my own completed  email marketing letters.  But I’m going to make you find the link further down the page!

The e-mail marketing Cover Letter

The short and catchy marketing letter should be no more than 4 or 5 lines long.  Its primary purpose is to immediately  keep the reader from deleting the email.  It needs to engage the reader in the first sentence.  Somewhere in that short letter, include a hyper link to your landing page. “What’s a landing page?” you might ask.  That’s easy:

The Landing Page

The landing page is one concise page that says a little more than the cover letter does.  It can reside inside your site somewhere, and probably will not be a page that anyone can navigate to by just looking around inside your site.  You “land” on the landing page by clicking an easy to see hyper link to it from the cover letter.   The information there is just a little more detailed extension of the lead-in.  But not too detailed!

Video on the landing page

A prominent promotional video on the landing page is a great help in keeping the attention of the person who lands on this page.  Everybody will click on a video, and some won’t even bother reading your text until they click on the video.  So above all, embed a great video on your landing page!  The video itself is also great SEO material, because it reside on YouTube and/or any other video host you choose to upload it to, serving as yet another backlink opportunity to  your website.

An Marketing letter and Landing Page Example

In the process of showing you this, I also get the opportunity to toot my own horn! Here’s an example of how that discussion of e-mail marketing fits together:

Consulting Services for Content Marketing

Consulting Services for Content Marketing, SEO, Blogging Support, Social Media, Etc.

In September 2013 I became the other half of what was initially Kristen’s brainchild business, which she had  appropriately named “Strategy Content Marketing”,  a business specializing in consulting services for content marketing and SEO.  She had already been developing the idea and the basic website  for a couple of years.

I had worked the previous summer on my last laborious contracted land surveying job, working away from home  in another state.  The personal company kept there was far less than endearing and the work was anything but really fun.  It was time to make a change for the better.

After spending a little time back home where I really like to be, I decided to devote my full time supporting and working with the only person I really want to be around all day long, my wife, Kristen, who already has been well versed in this specialty for some time now. While I gain the comfort and fun of working 24/7 with my favorite person, I also gain the benefits of learning and improving a new technical specialty for myself.

I teamed up with Kristen on this, and we charged ahead to be 100% ready for launch by the end of the year.  We are on schedule!   In October we rented an office so that we could devote all of our attention to this, and attacked this project with a level of effort effort like neither of us had ever before put forth.  By the end of the year 2013 we had our free video  training series complete and had accumulated a significant amount of content on our content marketing blog.  Then it was time to begin building a client base.

The objective behind Strategy Content marketing is to provide technical support and consultation services to clients seeking to make more effective use of their internet presence. Whether a client is just starting out by creating a website or blog from nothing, or already has an online presence which might be working at less than optimum efficiency, our objective is to help our customers to increase their business revenues by learning to take full advantage of the often mysterious and often seemingly disconnected intricacies which characterize internet marketing.

Our focus is on helping the client gain visibility and ultimately increased revenues through improved and increased use of internet resources. This work might include any level of support in areas such as website creation, website format and contentconsulting services for content marketing optimization, blogging and related support, SEO ranking assistance, video marketing and related SEO ranking, and any number of related subjects.

We operate daily, just about seven days per week, out of office facilities located in the Ozark Small Business Incubator (OzSBI), near the courthouse square in West Plains, MO.  In the sidebar to the right, you can put yourself on a list which gives you access to our video training series..  Email us via our Contact Page.  If you would like to contact us by phone, please put yourself on the list for our video training series, and we will respond  ASAP.

Thank you for considering us in your search for effective SEO and content marketing consultation services!
