Perhaps gaining some insight to such terminology is part of your motivation for being here now.

I decided to write this article because I think that the lack of understanding of the meaning of  buzz words and industry acronyms can often become stumbling blocks to your progress. People are unwilling to admit what they do not know, and that unwillingness holds them back.  Those using the technical jargon are unaware of that ignorance, and they keep talking.  That can get both of you nowhere fast and is just a waste of everyone’s breath!

Free Online Marketing Training Offered in Video Series

Because there are so many people out there wondering about free online marketing methods, inexpensive methods and so on, I put together this experiment in online marketing, offering free online marketing training to help people learn to understand online content marketing methods. In August 2013, I decided to see how quickly a new WordPress blog could build a business. Often people see obstacles where there’s only opportunity and some people seem to think that it’s too difficult to market their business online in this way.   I know it can seem overwhelming at first, but once you learn the valuable skills needed to start your content creation marketing efforts, you will realize that it really isn’t that difficult. Much like any other worthwhile endeavor, it just takes a little patience to work through the learning curve.

There are tons of buzz words flying around today like “social media marketing” and “video marketing” etc, which few people really understand. Therefore it makes it all too easy for software marketers to build software to make it “easier”. I say “easier” in quotes because much of the software you buy can be cheap, cheesy and worthless or close to worthless. Not to say all of it is, but my experience is that much of it is overpriced but under delivers. What’s worse, they always offer affiliate programs and try to get YOU to market and recommend their cheap, cheesy software junk to others for money. A blog is basically a website that is easy to create new “pages” on. Each page is a page of some kind of content – usually a combination of written content, pictures, video, audo and the like. These easily created “pages” are called “posts” in the web world. Each post is basically a page that a search engine will evaluate and decide where to rank. Therefore each blog post is a piece of content and that’s the basis of content marketing.

Content Marketing Is Cheap and Effective

The more of these blog posts and other types of content you put out there into the websphere, the more likely people are to find a piece of your content. The links you put with them will bring people back to whatever you link to, which will usually be a blog post or video.

So the basis of content marketing is creating content that people will actually want to see such as a blog post that is interesting or informative enough to read or a video that is interesting or informative enough to watch.

That’s it! That’s the big secret to promoting something online! It isn’t rocket science, but it’s easy to become intimidated with jargon and rules.  Don’t let this happen to you! :) If you just put a little time into learning and start putting these principles into practice, you will start making forward progress sooner than you probably think possible at this moment.

But I once read an interesting quote that stuck with me: “A year from today, you will wish you had started today.” I have found this to be so true.  I always wish that I would have started early. I usually procrastinate when I feel overwhelmed or feel like a project is too big for me, but after I learn a little bit about it and start making forward steps it gets easier and easier.

Content marketing is basically a getting your information out there and making it interesting enough that they choose to engage with you in some way. If you write, you want people to read and if you make videos you want people to watch. But lets say that you want to try to get more people to see your content. Where do you find them?

You find them by using your social media accounts like facebook, twitter, pinterest and G+ as well as using social bookmarking, articles and other places you can put content and backlinks online.

The overall scope of content marketing is creating stuff and putting it online and then putting information ABOUT your information online with backlinks to the information.  The links don’t just allow people to follow them back to your blog post or video, but also let search engines like Google know that people find the info valuable enough to “talk” about it and share it.

Many gurus will try to tell you that content marketing and seo marketing is dead and that you should buy their magical product instead because it’s so much more effective than actually creating information that people will want to read or watch, but be careful about falling into that trap.

Ask yourself if you would find value in what they are pushing?

Do yourself a favor and learn how to create content the right way by sharing information that people actually want to see.  After all, isn’t that what you are looking for when you are searching online?

Blogging is just one of a complete set of promotional elements which will elevate your site higher in search engine rankings.  But like everything else,  there is no fast and easy recipe to create a blog post that is likely to get noticed.  A complex set of influential factors affects the attention your article will get with respect to search ranking.  In order to maximize its effectiveness, blogs need to be effectively assembled.  This is an art, and we are all artists, working to make our model as close to the ideal as we can.

What Search Engines Want

Search engines will rank your site more highly based not only upon key word phrases, but also upon original and meaningful content.  Though it may seem effective to assemble nonsense text chock full of vital key word phrases, that tactic does no good for you at all and may even cause Google to blacklist your site forever.  We all have seen those nonsense pages which say nothing, and are obviously an attempt to to throw a lot of key words together, but these days you see them less and less often. There’s a good reason for that. Google  has buried them and they will never see the light of day again. People search the internet looking for information. Nobody will really gain any useful information from an article that really does not say anything. So they came to your site and read some nonsense.  Is that what you wanted?  Of course not!

In fact, this used to be a common trick, used by people trying to drive traffic to a site which might contain a profitable point per click ad, or something similar.  Not all search engines have caught on to this, but at present it is likely that Google will blacklist such sites when it discovers them, and put them at the bottom of the ranking list!

The most effective blog posts make a substantial point and present useful information to the reader.  A well written blog post contains the essential key word phrases by virtue of the fact that is written with the primary objective of actually educating the reader.  Search engine rankings come naturally and automatically to carefully composed articles.  Start out by making the points you want to make.  After you have completed a well thought out article, follow up by doing some research on key words and key word phrases which are relevant to the points your article is intended to express.

Key Words and Key Word Phrases

What kind of key words or phrases do you expect  people to be searching with which would direct them to your blog post or article?   Key word research is vital to the success of your choice of key words.  If you go to Google search you will find a utility called Google Keyword Tool.  Use your imagination, and picture what phrases people might be using to research the subject you are writing about.

Go to Google Keyword Tool and check it out.  Enter some phrase relevant to your topic.  What you will see is a summary of the latest number of searches made online worldwide for certain related phrases.  It doesn’t require a lot of explaining to see how useful this information can be.  Once you have identified the essential phraseology, namely, that which gets the most attention with respect to your topic, go back through your article and plant the essential words in appropriate locations at the beginning and near the end of the article.  Sprinkle words from the essential keyword phrases throughout the text, taking care that the text remains clear and sounds natural.

Paragraphs and Subheadings in Your Blog

I use Microsoft Word to assemble blog posts.  Word, like most word processors, offers paragraph heading features which not only help the writer to organize and keep information within a planned and outlined format, but which also happens to be used in the SEO process.

Search engines use the content of heading tags to gather information about the theme of your topic.  Do an effective job of titling your headings and subheadiongs, and you will get ranked higher simply by virtue of your own organization.  Your SEO increases when the title of your article and or paragraph consistently and naturally matches keyword content in the paragraph itself.

A bit of variation in header tags is also helpful.  You get the same idea across using different words, which makes the article not only more interesting to read, but also expands upon the base of keywords with which the search engine does its ranking.

You can increase your visibility greatly through the use of self made promotional videos.  In the first place, people are more likely to look at a video than they are to read the meat of your article.

Secondly, once they have viewed your video, if it got their attention effectively, they will be more likely to look into the content of your article.

Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, YouTube is a search engine in itself.  By creating your own YouTube channel, which uses its own independent system of ranking through the use of key words and phrasing which you provide in the video description, you increase your visibility even more.  In fact, you can and should include links to your blog and website in the YouTube video description.

Your Business Website – it’s the foundation of your online presence.

What is the foundation of your success online?  Is an attractive website all that is needed to ensuring success in marketing your business?

Just about everyone these days knows that a business with a website has a tremendous advantage in growth potential over a business without one. You don’t know me, but I can tell you by experience that the answer is an emphatic “NO!” And that is why you don’t know me – because when I was engaged in operating a sales business in the early days of internet marketing, I didn’t know how to market online either. So I have no great internet marketing success story to tell you from my business ventures in the 90s. But I do have a modest success story to tell you, which resulted from a more recent blogging effort designed to promote my own private ministry during the time it was my sole/soul occupation (pun intended).

My First Website Experience

For several years, which happened to be in the early 90s, in the infancy era of internet, my brother and I operated a family business oriented around the sales of highly specialized technical equipment in the land surveying industry. My brother was always more computer savvy than I ever had been. He had taught himself enough about HTML coding, which one really needed to know during that period, to publish a decent looking website. In the beginning, we enjoyed a lot of attention simply because our website was there. A search engine in that era was a very young concept, and there was little that one needed to do to get recognized because being online with a website presence was still a bit of a novelty.

Fast forward about 10 years. We had gained quite a bit of online recognition, but most of it was local and came through word of mouth. The acronym “SEO” was not yet in common

parlance. I decided it would be a good idea to initiate an online sales store to supplement our in-store sales. Since my brother was not available for the task, I chose to pay someone a lot of money to develop the online store pages. There was some talk about optimizing search terms, but I understood little about the concept or its importance. Our supplier delivered a decent (and pricey) product. I thought we could just sit back and wait for the orders to start pouring in. But nothing ever happened. We made perhaps a couple of sales from the site over a one year period. Shortly thereafter we ended up closing our sales business, so we made no effort to analyze what had gone wrong. We chalked it up to “bad economy”.

What Really Happened?

The bottom line is that a website presence means nothing today unless it gets looked at.  A house built upon the sand will fall.  If you go unnoticed online, you really have no foundation.  These days, anyone can create a website. Being online is easy. Getting firm footing is another thing altogether.

That is what Strategy Content Marketing is all about.
